Carpinus are deciduous shrubs and trees with attractive foliage and hop-like fruit clusters in late summer and autumn. 'Fastigiata' is a medium-sized tree with a narrow crown when young, but becomes more compact and ovoid with age, and is feathered to the ground. The green foliage is ribbed and finely serrated, and will turn yellow in the autumn. Catkins appear in the spring and are green, followed by winged nut in the autumn. An ideal specimen for planting in rows along a drive or avenue due to its elegant, columnar habit.
