Malus are small to medium-sized deciduous trees with showy flowers in spring and ornamental or edible fruit in autumn; some have good autumn foliage colour. 'John Downie' is a vigorous small deciduous tree with an ovoid crown and profuse white flowers opening from pink buds. Fruits are oval and a bright red and orange-yellow. Plant in partial shade to full sun in a well-drained, moist soil.
